The Ministry of Corporate Affairs has launched its largest one-time compliance relief scheme. From 15 April 2026 to 15 July 2026, companies with pending filings get a unique chance to regularize at a fraction of the usual cost.
Starting a business in India involves more than developing a product or finding customers. Entrepreneurs must also understand business registration, regulatory compliance and the government initiatives available to eligible startups.
DPIIT Startup Recognition is an official recognition available to eligible businesses under the Startup India framework. Depending on the applicable scheme and eligibility conditions, recognised startups may access benefits such as intellectual property facilitation, certain public procurement relaxations and opportunities to participate in government-supported programmes.
However, recognition does not automatically entitle every startup to every benefit. Individual schemes may have additional eligibility requirements.
Under the current Startup India recognition criteria, an eligible entity must generally meet the following conditions:
It must be incorporated as a Private Limited Company, registered partnership firm, Limited Liability Partnership (LLP) or eligible cooperative society.
A standard startup must be within 10 years of incorporation or registration. Eligible DeepTech startups may qualify for a period of up to 20 years.
Turnover must remain below ₹200 crore in any financial year since incorporation for standard startups, with a higher threshold of ₹300 crore for eligible DeepTech startups.
The business should work towards innovation, development or improvement of products, services or processes, or have a scalable model with potential for employment generation or wealth creation.
The entity must not have been formed by splitting up or reconstructing an existing business.
Founders should check the latest official criteria and supporting documentation before applying. Meeting the age and turnover limits alone does not guarantee recognition.
A Private Limited Company is a popular structure for startups planning to scale, bring in equity investors or establish formal shareholding arrangements.
Private Limited Company Registration creates a separate legal entity and provides a structured framework for ownership, governance and future investment. It can therefore be a practical option for founders building an investment-oriented startup.
However, DPIIT recognition is not restricted to private limited companies. Eligible LLPs and registered partnership firms may also qualify.

Eligible businesses can apply through the official Startup India recognition process. Founders should prepare their incorporation or registration certificate, business details and a clear explanation of their product, innovation or scalable business model. Additional supporting documents may be required.
Apply through the official Startup India portal and review the latest application requirements before submitting details.
Remember that DPIIT recognition and tax exemptions are separate matters. Certain tax benefits require a separate application and approval under the applicable provisions.
Once the business is incorporated, founders should establish proper accounting records, complete applicable post-incorporation compliance and maintain the documentation needed for future funding or government applications.
