Import Export Code (also known as IEC code) is a 10-digit identification number that is issued by the DGFT (Director General of Foreign Trade), Department of Commerce, Government of India. It is also known as Importer Exporter Code. Companies and businesses must obtain this code to start a business that deals with imports and export in the Indian territory. It is not possible to deal with export or import business without this IEC code.

After submitting all the requisite documents IEC is typically allotted by DGFT in 5-10 days. It is not necessary to show proof of any import or export to obtain IE Code.
Thus, for the promotion of export in business and to simplify the process of obtaining IEC registration the regulation of government provides only one IEC Code even for two businesses.
IEC is not mandatory for all traders who are registered under GST. In all such cases, the PAN of the trader shall be construed as a new IEC code for the purpose of import and export.
Persons importing or exporting goods from or to Nepal, Myanmar through Indo-Myanmar border areas and China, provided the CIF value of a single consignment does not exceed Rs. 25000. In the case of Nathula port, the applicable exemption ceiling is Rs. 1 lakh.
