Passport Seva

The government initiative "Passport Seva" operates as a Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) program in India which simplifies the passport acquisition procedure. The platform serves to enhance passport application accessibility while delivering optimal services and complete transparency to all people in India. The platform serves as an essential digital service platform for the government to provide easy online passport applications.

Types of Passports Issued

  • Normal Passport: Indian citizens receiving normal passports obtain access for standard international travel when they pursue different goals including educational experiences, education and business ventures.

  • Diplomatic Passport: Issued to Indian diplomats, government officials, and their families for official travel.

  • Official Passport: Issued to government servants traveling abroad on official duties.

How to Apply for a Passport via Passport Seva

  • Online Registration
  1. The process of applying for a passport in India starts with visiting the official Passport Seva Portal (https://www.passportindia.gov.in/). Applicants need to create an account by registering on the portal. This involves providing basic personal information, including name, address, date of birth, and contact details.
  • Filling the Application Form

Any individual who completes registration needs to use the passport application form. People can access two different application formats.

  1. Fresh Passport Application (Form No. 1): For those who have never had a passport.

  2. Reissue of Passport (Form No. 2): For those renewing or replacing an expired passport.

The application form asks for detailed personal and family information, including:

  1. Full Name

  2. Date of Birth

  3. Parents' Names

  4. Address Details

  5. Passport Type (Ordinary/Diplomatic/Official)

After filling out the form, you must verify the entered information and submit the application.

  • Paying the Application Fee
  1. Once the application is submitted, applicants must pay the passport application fee. The fee varies depending on the type of passport, as well as the processing speed (normal or tatkal). Payment can be made through online methods such as debit/credit cards, net banking, or through a bank challan.
  • Appointment Booking
  1. After the fee is paid, the next step is to schedule an appointment at the nearest Passport Seva Kendra (PSK). During this step, you’ll need to choose a time slot that is convenient for you. Make sure to keep all necessary documents ready, as they will be required during the appointment.
  • Document Verification

A person should visit either a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or a Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) on the appointment date with all required supporting documents:

  1. Aadhar Card, Utility Bill, etc.

  2. Birth Certificate, School Leaving Certificate, etc.

  3. Aadhaar Card, Voter ID, etc.

  4. Passport-sized photographs (as per the passport guidelines)

At this stage the verification process takes place followed by collecting biometric information such as fingerprints and photograph data.

  • Police Verification
  1. A police evaluation step follows document verification to check the applicant's identity together with their address location. The local police perform this procedure through their physical visits to verify the applicant's home address and send a report to the passport authorities.
  • Processing and Dispatch
  1. Once the police verification successfully finishes the authorities process the passport. The documentation review process verifies all specified information alongside criminal record checks to achieve final approval for applications.
  2. The authorities deliver the approved passport to the address that the applicant originally provided during the application process. Regular passport processing time spans from 15 days to 45 days but these durations can change for different cases. The Tatkal service option shortens the waiting time to 1-3 days at an additional cost to the applicant.

Passport Seva - Benefits and Features

  • Through its online portal users can obtain their passport at home with no requirement for office visits.

Passport Seva Kendra (PSK)

A Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) is a dedicated center where applicants can submit their documents, get their biometrics taken, and complete other necessary steps for passport processing. There are many PSKs located throughout India, and these centers are managed by TCS (Tata Consultancy Services) on behalf of the Ministry of External Affairs.

Services at PSK:

  • Submission of Passport Applications

  • Document Verification

  • Biometric Collection

  • Enquiry and Issue Resolution

Timings and Appointment:

  • PSKs are generally open Monday to Friday, and some locations may work on weekends.

  • An appointment is necessary to visit a PSK, and walk-ins are not allowed unless there is an urgent request.

Tatkal Passport Scheme

The Tatkal Passport Scheme exists specifically to provide swift passport services to applicants requiring urgent delivery of their passport. The application process through Tatkal Passport Scheme takes 1-3 days to complete as long as applicants submit all required materials and add the additional service fee. The scheme benefits people who need passport issuance urgently because of medical exigencies or business requirements or family needs.

Conclusion

The Indian government has implemented Passport Seva to provide citizens with simplified passport services which are both transparent and quick. The application process became simpler and faster through digital platforms that substituted complex steps losing time. Through the Passport Seva portal Indian nationals can have a trouble-free process both when applying for their initial passport and when renewing their existing documents.
